Tia Fuller Quartet
2:30-3:45PM, Absopure Waterfront Stage
One of the more versatile and dynamic artists on today’s scene, saxophonist Tia Fuller is equally at home performing show-stopping solos as a member of R&B superstar Beyoncé’s all-female band or leading her own swinging jazz dates and recordings. Fuller’s newest release on Mack Avenue Records, Decisive Steps—her third album as a leader and the long-awaited follow-up to her well-received label debut, Healing Space (2007)—is a powerful statement, reflecting the strong influences of Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane, while displaying her own special “genre-crossing artistry” and fearless commitment to artistic growth. As she explains, “I am relentless in my pursuit to decisively move forward . . . progressing in my purpose, stepping forward in faith . . . not fear.” Joining Fuller at Detroit Jazz Fest are pianist Shamie Royston, bassist Miriam Sullivan and drummer Rudy Royston.
