Freddy Cole Quartet
4:45–6:00PM, Absopure Waterfront Stage
Blues singer Ruth Brown once noted, “If you quiet your thoughts and really listen, Freddy Cole will open the door to your heart with a key you did not even know existed.” We could not have said it better. Now in his 40th year of performing, Freddy has emerged as one of jazz’s premier singer/pianists. With a personal style that evokes memories of (but does not imitate) his legendary brother, Nat “King” Cole, he has developed a huge and devoted following of his own and released several critically acclaimed albums, including 2001’s Grammy-nominated Merry Go Round. His latest release, The Dreamer in Me (2009), features Freddy in a live set at New York’s Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola. Accompanying him at the Detroit Jazz Fest are Curtis Boyd (drums), Randy Napolean (guitar) and Elias Bailey (bass).
