Detroit Symphony Civic Jazz Orchestra with special guest Matt Wilson
12:15-1:00PM, Carhartt Amphitheatre Stage
The DSO Civic Jazz Orchestra features some of Michigan's premiere young jazz musicians, who receive training that builds upon the strong tradition of jazz in Detroit. Orchestra members benefit from training provided by leading professionals in the jazz field, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s unparalleled facilities and a season of concert presentations at the Max M. Fisher Music Center. In 2009 the orchestra appeared at DJF with bassist Christian McBride. This year, they will be joined by drummer and bandleader Matt Wilson, whose accolades include four consecutive titles as “rising star” drummer in the DownBeat critic’s poll; “Best New Artist” by the New York Jazz Critics Circle; winner of the 2004 Modern Drummers reader’s poll; and a 2004 and 2006 “Jazz Drummer of the Year” nomination by the Jazz Journalists Association. Similar accolades have been heaped upon his ensembles – the Matt Wilson Quartet and his other foursome, Arts and Crafts.
