Brownie Speaks: The Music of Clifford Brown featuring Dominick Farinacci and Jonathan Batiste
9:15–10:45PM, Absopure Waterfront Stage
This performance is a tribute to legendary jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown. Though he died over 50 years ago in a tragic car accident (at the age of 25) and recorded for a mere four years, “Brownie” continues to cast a spell over the jazz world with his beautifully meticulous improvisational lines, burnished sound and heartfelt expression. Dominick Farinacci, one of jazz’s rising young stars and an avowed Brownie enthusiast, teams up with celebrated New Orleans pianist Jonathan Batiste to lead this special outing. Farinacci has won numerous awards including Japan’s International New Star Award, an honor previously awarded to Diana Krall and Christian McBride. He has also recorded six well-received albums as a leader, including his latest, Lovers, Tales & Dances (2009). The 24-year-old Batiste has released four albums as a leader, including The Amazing Jon Batiste! (2009), and performed and recorded with some of the Big Easy’s leading musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Nicholas Payton and Donald Harrison. He was awarded the "Movado Future Legend" award in jazz in 2006. Farinacci and Batiste are joined by bassist Ben Williams, alto saxophonist Dana Stephens and drummer Carmen Intorre.
