Salim Washington & the Harlem Arts Ensemble
4:45-6:00PM, Mack Avenue Records Pyramid Stage

A master tenor saxophonist, multi-reedman, composer and jazz educator, Salim Washington is one of the rising stars on the New York jazz scene today. Washington has played with some of jazz’s finest musicians, including Randy Weston, Pharoah Sanders, John Hicks, Hilton Ruiz and Charles Tolliver. He is also leader and founder of the Harlem Arts Ensemble. All About Jazz called the group’s latest album, Harlem Homecoming, “. . . a celebration of what this music ought to be all about . . . its uninhibited joyfulness brings a smile to the face and a fire to the heart.” The set features Washington on tenor sax, flute and oboe, with KuUmba Frank Lacy (trombone and trumpet), Melanie Dyer (viola), Pamela Wise (piano), Malik Washington (drums), Aaron James (bass) and special guest Keith Owens (guitar).
