Ellen Rowe Quartet
2:00–3:15PM, Mack Avenue Records Pyramid Stage
Pianist and composer-arranger Ellen Rowe returns to Detroit Jazz Fest on the heels of her latest release, Wishing Well (2010), which features nine of her original compositions. All About Jazz described the outing as “. . . a master class in small-band, straight-ahead, jazz,” adding, “Rowe’s writing stands comparison with the best contemporary jazz composers.” In addition to making her mark as a formidable bandleader, Rowe recently completed a commissioned arrangement of Red River Valley for the Westchester Jazz Orchestra and arranged Dave Liebman's Le Roi du Monde for Chamber Jazz Ensemble with Dave as guest soloist. The Ellen Rowe Quartet includes saxophonist Andrew Bishop, bassist Kurt Krahnke and drummer Pete Siers.
