Detroit Tribute to Betty Carter
1:00–2:00PM, Absopure Waterfront Stage
Pianist Cliff Monear leads this tribute to the legendary Betty Carter, one of the most adventurous and innovative singers in the history of jazz. Possessing one of the era’s most extraordinary voices, Carter was an “idiosyncratic stylist and a restless improviser who pushed the limits of melody and harmony as much as any bebop horn player” (All Music Guide). She also earned a wide reputation as the “Godmother of Jazz,” due to her extensive work in cultivating young musical talent, including 2010 DJF artists Mulgrew Miller and Benny Green. Despite her death in 1998, Carter continues to have a major influence on many of today’s singers and instrumentalists, as evidenced by the artists on hand for this special set. Joining Cliff Monear-Schindler are some of Detroit’s finest: Paul Keller (bass), Sean Dobbins (drums) and vocalists Naima Shambourger, Kelly Broadway and Stephanie Monear Shindler.
