Danilo Pérez Quintet
5:15–6:30PM, Carhartt Amphitheatre Stage
Multi-Grammy Award–winner Danilo Pérez has already made his mark as one of the most influential and dynamic musicians of our time. The Panamanian-born pianist has led his own groups since the early ‘90s, earning three Grammy nominations for his “ebullient and innovative” recordings. Motherland (2000) was nominated for two Grammy Awards for “Best Latin Jazz Album” and also garnered a third win for “Best Jazz Album” from the prestigious Boston Music Awards. Pérez has also worked with some of the greatest names in jazz, including Jon Hendricks, Wynton Marsalis, Dizzy Gillespie, Paquito D’Rivera, Roy Haynes and many others. Since 2000, he has been a member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet, the first permanent acoustic band under Shorter’s leadership and one of the world’s most acclaimed groups.
In an attempt to place the gifted pianist’s already distinguished career in perspective, noted jazz critic Ben Ratliff stated, “When the dust settles, the pianist Danilo Pérez will be looking like one of the best things that happened to jazz around the turn of the millennium . . . [he] is defining post-Hancock, post-Jarrett mainstream jazz piano, with his harmonic knowledge and his will to make a piano trio exciting and fluid.”
Appearing with Pérez are Ben Street (bass), Adam Cruz (drums), Rudresh Mahanthappa (saxophone) and Rogerio Boccato (percussion).
