Carl Cafagna & North Star Jazz
Noon–1:00PM, Carhartt Amphitheatre Stage
With a sound that is hard-hitting, soulful and sophisticatedly modern, North Star Jazz has quickly become one of Detroit’s hottest bands. Led by saxophonist Carl Cafagna, the group’s repertoire includes original compositions, works by Horace Silver, Bobby Watson, Donald Brown, Wayne Shorter and Benny Golson, “soul jazz” favorites by Eddie Harris and Cannonball Adderley, and even a few arrangements of popular hits by groups like Earth, Wind & Fire. The Detroit Free Press praised their “. . . nattily tailored arrangements, a juicy three-horn front line, aggressive rhythmic grooves and a nice variety of material and moods.” Cafagna is joined by Scott Cowan (trumpet), James Hughes (saxophone), Scott Gwinnell (piano), Jordan Schug (bass) and Scott Kretzer (drums).
