The Brad Felt NuQuartet Plus
3:30-4:30PM, Mack Avenue Records Pyramid Stage
For over 30 years, Brad Felt has been working to advance the role of both the tuba and euphonium as a front-line improvising instrument in modern jazz. A product of the Detroit area’s Oakland University jazz program, Felt has appeared with artists such as Ellis Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Dave Liebman, Hank Jones and Jerry Gonzales, to name a few. The Detroit Free Press hailed him as “One of the unsung heroes of the Detroit jazz scene,” adding that he “. . . plays the euphonium with such a compelling combination of brains, facility and a command of contemporary post-bop that he makes you forget that his instrument is still a rarity in jazz.” Felt’s latest group, The Brad Felt NuQuartet Plus, features Steve Wood (reeds), Gary Schunk (piano), Pat Prouty (bass) and Bill Higgins (drums).
