The Detroit Jazz Festival’s Jazz Infusion Program is the flagship program of our educational wing. The goal of this joint initiative between the festival and Detroit Public Schools is to help foster the growth of young musicians from the city so that they can better compete for college scholarships, pursue careers in music, and continue Detroit’s rich and deep jazz tradition. Now in its sixth year, the program has expanded to include the Detroit School of Arts (DSA), Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School, Renaissance High School, Cass Technical High School, Bates Academy, and Duke Ellington @ Beckham.

One of the unique qualities of this program is that it occurs at the schools during regular band class hours. At the core of this program are our Educators in Residence, a collection of some of Detroit’s most talented jazz artists and educators. Our educators are each assigned to partner schools, where they work together with the band directors to provide customized curricula and assistance tailored to fit the needs of each school’s band.

Our Educators in Residence teach at such institutions as the University of Michigan and Wayne State University, and between them they have decades of experience performing on national and international stages. Each educator also shares the festival’s deep commitment to helping young musicians grow and reach their goals. Our Educators in Residence currently include: Chuck Newsome (guitar), Marion Hayden (bass), Russ Miller (reeds), Ralphe Armstrong (bass), Wendell Harrison (reeds), Gayelynn McKinney (drums), and Buddy Budson (piano).

The Detroit Jazz Festival has formed a lasting partnership with Detroit Public Schools Director of Fine Arts, Willie McAllister. This collaboration led to the creation of the DPS All-City Jazz Combo in the fall of 2012, composed of select advanced music students from the different schools in the district. The DPS All-City Jazz Combo maintains a regular performance schedule in the region. In 2013 and 2014, the band performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival, and at the Mackinac Policy Conference at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, amongst other performances.

Each year, Detroit Public School students also benefit from visits by the festival’s Artist in Residence. Past artists include Christian McBride, John Clayton, and Terence Blanchard. This year, 2014 Detroit Jazz Festival Artist-in-Residence Joshua Redman gave a private master class for the Detroit Public Schools All-City Jazz Combo, where he worked with the group on a variety of topics, including improvisation, phrasing, tone development, and group interaction.
