Application for Detroit Jazz Festival's Marcus Belgrave National Jazz Trumpet Competition

In Memory of Jazz Legend, Drummer & Detroit Big Band Leader JC Heard This year, Celebrating the compositions of Dave Brubeck

Improvisation/spontaneous interaction is the driving force in jazz music. Equally important, are the underlying structures created by composers and the infinite structural variations created by jazz arrangers through the masterful manipulation of the musical language. The Detroit Jazz Festival’s JC Heard Jazz Arranging Competition is an annual competition designed to celebrate a specific jazz composer and highlight the artistry of the jazz arranger by encouraging new works from young arrangers throughout the United States.

Each year, arrangers will be asked to choose a composition from a significant jazz composer’s body of work and create an original arrangement for a designated ensemble. This year, arrangers – aged 35 years and younger – are invited to arrange a Dave Brubeck composition of their choice for big band (Big band instrumentation as defined below)

A panel of judges including Chris Brubeck (son of Dave Brubeck), Chris Collins (DJF Artistic Director), and Detroit Professional Arrangers will select finalists based on: Artistic excellence; creativity; technique; integration of soloists, improvisational elements, and ensemble elements; originality; and stylistic continuity.

Grand Prize: Winner will be awarded $1000; their winning arrangement will be performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival by Detroit All-Star Big Band.

Runners-Up: Two finalists will be awarded $500 each; recognition on our website and from the stage at the Detroit Jazz Festival.

Applications must be submitted along with original score here, or burn a PDF of your score onto CD-R and mail to Detroit Jazz Festival, Attn. Arranging Competition, 19900 Harper Avenue, Harper Woods, MI 48225. All applications must be received by August 1, 2013.
