The Legacy Series: Celebrating the Artistry and Mentorship of George "Sax" Benson at the Detroit Jazz Festival offers professional artists at any stage in their career the opportunity to submit for a honorarium ($800 - $3000) and performance slot at the Detroit Jazz Festival.
Each year the Detroit Jazz Festival selects a significant artist from the rich history of Detroit jazz as a magnate for all of us to discover or revisit, celebrate, and emulate. The idea is not to merely copy or tribute the legacy artists, but to draw new inspiration from those that have come before us and built the foundations of the Detroit-Sound.
This year the Detroit Jazz Festival celebrates saxophonist, composer, and teacher George "Sax" Benson. In addition to being Detroit's go-to jazz saxophone soloist, Mr. Benson has taught generations of jazz artists from his home studio, Wayne State University, and the Detroit Wayne Music Studio (now part of the Detroit Saxophone Center.) His stylistic depth ranges from early swing to bebop, hard-bop, and post-coltrane language. George "Sax" Benson continues to be a beacon of jazz, Detroit, and all that swings!
The Legacy Series seeks to feature those artists who have been influenced by George's legacy, either as a student, bandmate, or through his recorded legacy.
Check out George's amazing recordings, sidemen, compositions, influences, disciples and discover (or re-discover) the potent contributions of this outstanding Detroit-Legacy- Artist.
Artist(s) selected for this series will be granted a performance slot at the 2017 Detroit jazz Festival and $800-$3000 Honorarium. The selected artists/ensembles will be presented as part of the 2017 Detroit Jazz Festival's Legacy Series: Celebrating the Artistry and Mentorship of George "Sax" Benson.
