Marcus Belgrave—Artist, Mentor, Ambassador & true Detroit Jazz Legend -- has inspired generations of jazz musicians around the world. In addition to being an original member of the Ray Charles band & the Lincoln Center Orchestra, Marcus has performed with Ella, Sarah, Dinah, Max Roach, Charles Mingus, McCoy Tyner, David Newman & recorded on Atlantic, Columbia, Motown & other major labels.
Marcus’ hard swinging style is indicative of the Detroit sound which blends swing, be-bop, & blues with a freedom & creativity born from a lifetime in the jazz community. His artistic contributions are only matched by his commitment to passing on the jazz language & culture to new generations of artists.
In honor of Marcus Belgrave, the Detroit Jazz Festival is seeking to recognize & provide performance opportunities to outstanding jazz trumpeters 35 years of age or younger whose artistry reflects the commitment to tradition & search for originality that are tenants of Marcus Belgrave’s virtuosity.
Applicants must submit an application along with three (3) tracks* featuring trumpeter with a rhythm section. Applications must be submitted along with mp3 tracks online here, or with CD-R by mail to Detroit Jazz Festival, Attn. Trumpet Competition, 19900 Harper Avenue, Harper Woods, MI 48225
*Track 1 is your choice of either an up-tempo Rhythm Changes Tune or Cherokee.
Three finalists will be selected & scheduled to appear in Detroit on August 1 & 2,2013. (Air travel, ground transportation & hotel will be provided.)
*Track 2 is a ballad performance;--Tune to be chosen from the following list:
- Round Midnight
- You’re my Everything
- Easy Living
- I Don’t Stand a Ghost Of A Chance With You
*Track 3 is a 12 Bar Blues Tune of your choice.
August 1, 2013: Each finalist will play a 1/2 set with a professional Detroit Rhythm Section at the Dirty Dog Jazz Café – to be streamed live via our website. A panel of judges, including Marcus Belgrave& Chris Collins, DJF Artistic Director, will select the grand-prize winner based on artistic excellence; creativity; group interaction, originality, familiarity with the jazz vocabulary, & stylistic continuity.
August 2, 2013: All Finalists will play together at a 3-set jam session with a professional Detroit Rhythm Section at Cliff Bell’s Jazz Club.
Grand Prize: Winner will be awarded $1500 & scheduled to perform a set at the 2013 Detroit Jazz Festival with the Detroit Jazz Festival All-Star Quartet.
All submissions must be received by July 10, 2013. Three finalists will be selected by July 22, 2013.
Runners-Up: Two finalists will be awarded $500 each; recognition on our website & from the stage at the Detroit Jazz Festival.
